Giant Red Ring Over Italy: Photographer Captures Rare ELVE Sky Event

Eerie Glowing Red Ring Appears Over Italian Town — The Rare Sky Phenomenon Explained.

A Mysterious Red Halo Over Italy

This is a rare atmospheric event, and, for a second time, it was captured by photographer Valter Binotto, who has made a name for himself photographing such rare events. His first shot of this strange red halo was taken back in March 2023; now, lightning has struck again.

The image reveals a gigantic blood-red ring suspended above the Alps, silent, smooth, and surreal.
Many who first viewed it online believed that this resembled:

A UFO landing zone.

A cosmic portal.

A wormhole opening into the sky.

But scientists quickly stepped in with an explanation.

What Are ELVEs? The Science Behind the Red Ring.

The glowing halo is called an ELVE, which is short for

Emission of Light and Very Low Frequency Perturbations due to Electromagnetic Pulse Sources
In other words:

When extremely powerful lightning sends its electromagnetic pulse upward and it hits the ionosphere, an ELVE appears as a red flash.

This red flash:

Forms huge circular or disc-shaped rings.

Occurs 50–60 miles above the Earth

Lasts just one-thousandth of a second

Is not visible with unaided eyes

That's why it's extremely rare to capture it in a photo; timing, angle, and the weather need to
 be just perfect.

The Source: A Thunderstorm Nearly 185 Miles Away

Amazingly, this ELVE didn’t come from Possagno itself. They are so huge that the ELVEs can be photographed even from hundreds of miles away. This makes Binotto's image not only mysterious but a scientific treasure.

A Natural Phenomenon That Looks Supernatural

Even with the scientific explanation, ELVEs still look like something from another world.

They remind us how powerful and mysterious Earth's atmosphere truly is.
What seemed to be some sort of portal or UFO was actually:
A red-painted sky at the edge of space due to a lightning-generated electromagnetic pulse. A natural phenomenon, yet nothing short of magical.
